Boxing fans have expressed shock over Tyson Fury’s new statue in London, which many are comparing to being made of “butter.” The sculpture, located in Potters Field Park next to Tower Bridge, depicts Fury with a raised fist and a golden crown atop his head. It stands alongside a statue of UFC legend Francis Ngannou, with a giant golden crown between them that reads “Battle of the Baddest.”
This promotional initiative was launched ahead of the heavyweight clash between Fury and Ngannou on October 28 in Saudi Arabia. However, reactions have been mixed, particularly regarding Ngannou’s lack of professional boxing experience, leading some to question the competitiveness of the match. Additionally, there are ongoing criticisms of the Saudi royal family’s use of sports to divert attention from their human rights record.
The statue, however, has drawn particular ire due to its appearance. Many fans have taken to social media to voice their opinions, with comments suggesting it looks like it was sculpted from “Lurpak” butter, calling it a “waste of money.” One fan tweeted, “What a waste of money,” while another remarked, “Is that sculptured out of Lurpak?” Others chimed in with remarks like, “Ffs looks ridiculous,” and “I can’t believe it’s not butter,” highlighting the general disapproval of the statue’s aesthetics.
