Selena Gomez’s mom talked about having her daughter when she was only 16. She also said that she and Selena “grew up” together.
Mandy Teefey, 47, is one of The Moms in Glamour’s Women of the Year issue. She is the mom of Selena and her younger sister Gracie.
Donna Kelce, Tina Knowles, and Maggie Baird joined Mandy, who is also the 31-year-old’s business partner, to talk about how they raised some of today’s most successful teens and young adults.
Mandy talked about getting pregnant when she was 16 and said she “didn’t have any idea of what to expect” when she gave birth to Selena.
She said in a sweet voice, “It’s almost like we grew up together.”
“We joke that we’ll have to live in retirement homes together.” We’re only sixteen years apart.
Mandy also said that having Gracie, who is now 11, later in life was very different from having Selena when she was 16.
“A blessing,” she said. “But yes, very scary.”
While Selena was growing up in the public eye, Mandy said she was careful to make sure she taught her good morals and values.
“Then there’s the extra pressure of being in the spotlight,” she said. “They’re trying to grow and be themselves and go through the same things that every other kid goes through, but they don’t get to do that without being judged.”
The proud mom thought back to a time when she saw a chance to do just that.
She said, “That is one of my favourite stories!”
She was getting out of the caravan, and someone was holding an umbrella for her while they brought her food and other things. I told them, “She can hold her own umbrella.”
“She needs to learn how to fill up her own petrol tank.” She needs to start being a person.
Selena and her mum seem to be very close. Her mum worked with Gomez on the Netflix show 13 Reasons Why and helped start the mental health company Wondermind.
In the beginning of the year, Mandy talked about the actress’s breaks from social media.
She said that Gomez eventually chose how long each of her breaks would be, saying, “Selena gives herself whatever time she needs.”
The singer’s mother also said that her daughter often took short breaks from social media but always went back to her different accounts.
She said, “I can go a week without looking at any social media, and then I’ll go back and try to catch up.”
Teefey then told her fans to take breaks from social media every so often to keep their feet on the ground.
“You’re more at ease in your own world and living in the present.” She said, “It’s so much calmer.”
The singer’s mother then talked about how she and her daughter dealt with mental health days. After taking a break from social media, the singer often spends time with her family.
“We get together and plan a movie day. We cook food and hang out with each other.” “After that, we all fall asleep,” she said.
