Selena Gomez and David Henrie had a sweet meeting in the first look at Wizards Beyond Waverly Place, Disney’s much-anticipated follow-up to Wizards of Waverly Place.
The sneak peek at the reboot came out on Friday. It showed what goes on behind the scenes of the show, which comes 12 years after the end of the original series.
Cast members Selena, 32, who plays Alex Russo, and David, 35, who plays Justin Russo, were in the clip. Jerry Russo, who was played by David DeLuise, also came back.
In the preview, Gomez said, “This is where it all began,” and then she added, “We’re home.”
Gomez is in charge of creating the reboot, but she will only be in the first episode.
David has chosen to live a normal life with his wife Giada (Mimi Gianopulos), boys Roman (Alkaio Thiele) and Milo (Max Matenko), and his mother, Janice LeAnn Brown (Billie). The second season will be about David.
“When Justin’s sister Alex (Gomez) brings Billie to his house to ask for help, Justin realises he needs to dust off his magical skills to teach the young wizard while also juggling his daily duties and protecting the Wizard World’s future,” the show’s synopsis says.
Selena and David show up on set for the first time at the beginning of the first look.
She can be seen happily hugging her co-star as she says, “We’re home.”
David then shows his fans around the new Russo home and says that “things have changed” and “the Russos have grown.”
He tells Brown, the new face of the show, about himself while they are in the family kitchen.
An early clip of the show shows Selena telling David, “Billie is rebellious, stubborn, and sarcastic.”
He jokes, “Sounds like someone else I know.” Selena makes a face at him. “Hey, I get it, too,” they said.
The video then cuts to a live recording of David talking to a crowd of excited people.
“Who remembers the original Wizards of Waverly Place?” he asks the crowd.
As the crowd cheers, he says, “We wanted to bring that magic back to life and share it with a new generation.”
The new series looks like it will be just as magical as the old one.
In the clip, characters avoid wand sparks, zap food by mistake, and become partially invisible.
Gomez’s famous theme song “Everything Is Not What It Seems” ends the movie and sets the mood for an exciting montage of what’s to come.
“We’re back!” Selena shouts at one point, and Brown adds, “With style!”
At the end of the clip, David says, “Still got it” as Selena spins her wand.
Selena announced the official name of the Wizards of Waverly Place sister show in May.
The actress said she was “very excited” to announce the name of the revival show at the ABC and Disney Upfronts event in New York City. It is Wizards Beyond Waverly Place.
She said, “When you do get to go home again, sometimes magical things happen.”
After she announced the show’s name on stage, Disney posted first look photos from the new show on Instagram. The show was first announced in January of this year.
In the pictures, Gomez and her old co-star David were seen acting like the in-laws again.
A test order for the new show was sent out by Disney Branded Television in January.
It was announced that the singer of “Love On” would only be a guest star on the show and will also be an executive producer.
Gomez and Henrie were also seen in Disney’s post taking a picture with the new leads and the rest of the team.
The first Wizards of Waverly Place showed how the Russo family, who were secretly magical, lived. It was about Alex, Justin, and Max (Jake T. Austin), three brothers, as they went through their teens.
They also played lead roles in the 2009 follow-up movie Wizards of Waverly Place: The Movie.
In 2012, Gomez played the same part in a TV special called The Wizards Return: Alex vs. Alex. Henrie was supposed to be in the special, but she couldn’t because she had to work on another movie.
Later this year, Disney Channel and Disney+ will show the first episode of Wizards Beyond Waverly Place.
